Program Description

Continuing on the success of the Geometry Center's 1995 Summer Materials Development program and its 1995-96 course, Geometry and Technology in the Secondary School, the Geometry Center will offer another innovative summer opportunity for teachers July 8 - 26, 1996. This three-week summer program is designed to bring together teachers from across th country to participate in an intense experience that will increase their knowledge of:

The course will cover materials for effective use in the traditional geometry course or as enrichment in other mathematics courses. To assist participating teachers, the Geometry Center will provide:

This program will provide an exceptional opportunity to experience being in a course that:

Teachers in the 1996 program will be expected to remain in contact with their team members and te Center during the 1996-97 school year (via telecommunications or in person, as appropriate). They will report how the materials are working or were modified for use, and how the course content affected their students and their own teaching.

Geometry and Technology in the Secondary School

This course (Math 5337) focuses on the geometry of symmetry, manifolds and dynamics, and on the use of technology to enhance the study of geometric concepts.

Teachers in the summer program will learn how to:

Tuition Waiver

Tuition for the 3-credit University of Minnesota course, Math 5337, will be waived for all participants.

Housing

Double-occupancy, air-conditioned dormitory rooms with full board will be provided for each participant. All participants are expected to live on campus during the entire three week program, July 8-26, 1996.

There are no specific background requirements for this program. However, our aim is to put together teams whose combined membership exhibits the following talents:

Individuals with a depth of experience in one or more of the areas listed above will have as good, or slightly better, a chance of being selected as tose with a broad exposure but less depth in at least one area. Availability to attend the full three-week session is essential for acceptance.
