Moving images to and from the Macintosh:

• Start Fetch on the Macintosh (it is in the Network Apps folder of the Apple menu).

• Fill in the fields in the login dialog box that appears. Make sure the machine name is one of the Unix machines at the Geometry Center (for example bers.geom.umn.edu). You can leave the directory field blank, or you can fill it in if you want to start at a directory other than your home directory.

• Once you have logged in, you should see a list of files and directories. You can navigate this list by double-clicking on directories to open them, and using the direcotry name menu just above the directory listing to move to parent directories (just like in a standard file dialog box). Move to the directory where you want to get or put the images.

• Select the Binary radio button next to the direcotory listing.

• If you are moving images from the Unix machine to the Mac:
  • Select the images you want to move (you can select more than one file by holding down the SHIFT key and drag-select a collection of names, or by holding down the OPTION key and selecting additional files individually).

  • In order for you to be able to open the files correctly on the mac, they need to have the proper file types. If the the file name ends in ".gif" it should get the correct type automatically. If not, you will need to specify the type by hand. If you are moving just one file, there should be a place on the dialog box where you can type this in. If you are moving several files, however, you should use the Customize/Preferences menu item, and select the Downloading topic. Set the file type here (it should be "GIFf" for .GIF files. The creator can be left as "????".

  • Select the Get Files button. The mouse pointer will turn into a little dog that will run as the files are being fetched. You should get progress messages in the box at the right-hand side of the screen. When the transfer is complete the dog will turn back into the mouse pointer.

• If you are moving images from the Mac to a unix machine:
  • Select the Put file button (or if you want to move many files at once, use the Remote/Put Folders and Files menu item). Select the file or files to be moved.

  • Yous should get a panel that includes a menu for the file format (it will probably say "Macbinary II"). You should change this to "Raw Data".

  • Press the OK button, and the transfer should start. The mouse pointer will change to a running dog as the files are moved, and you should see status messages in the box at the right.

• Once you have moved all the files you want to move, close the connection and choose the File/Quit menu item to quit from Fetch.
