Communicating Mathematics with Hypertext
June 3-7, 1996
A Short Course at The Geometry Center
Program Description
The Geometry Center is sponsoring a 5-day course,
Communicating Mathematics with Hypertext, June 3-7, 1996.
The course will present a comprehensive overview of using the
World-Wide Web (WWW) for communicating mathematical ideas at all
levels, from research results to educational materials. It will
include:
- basic design priciples for WWW documents;
- methods for including mathematical notation in Web pages;
- creating mathematical images and animations and including them in
Web pages;
- interfacing Web pages with other programs via forms and scripts;
- an introduction to freely available software useful for math Web
pages.
Participants will work on Web projects as the course progresses,
utilizing the state-of-the-art facilities at the Geometry Center.
Stipends and Fees
Course registration will be fully covered by the Geometry Center. A
limited amount of travel support is also available.
Participants will be responsible for making their own arrangements for
lodging. The administrative staff of the Geometry Center is
available to assist with arrangements.
Course Outline
- An Introduction to the World-Wide Web
- Basic commands in the hypertext markup language (HTML)
- Principles of good HTML style
- Some advanced HTML commands
- Task: Begin making home pages.
- Making mathematical images
- Including images in web pages
- Image processing
- Task: Add mathematical Illustrations.
- Including mathematical notation
- Making animations
- Task: Include mathematics with animation.
- Forms and scripts
- Tools for interactive applications
- Task: Select an advanced project and work on it with support
from the course staff and other participants.
Eligibility and Application Procedure
While the course is designed primarily with mathematics graduate
students in mind, postdocs and faculty members are also welcome to
apply.
Participants should have a basic familiarity with computers and their
use. The only specific background requirement is experience in using
one or more of the most common text editors. Facility with any of the
following, though not required, will increase the level of what the
individual can accomplish during the week:
- Basic UNIX commands and utilities,
- TeX, PERL or shell scripts,
- Maple or Mathematica,
- Graphics tools.
Because many of the resources for producing high quality Web documents
are UNIX based, the course will be conducted primarily in a
UNIX environment. Participants will be able to test the final look of
their documents using various browsers on a range of UNIX, Macintosh,
and Windows machines.
Enrollment is limited to 24 participants.
A text version of the
application form is available online.
Applications should be postmarked by March 15, 1996.
Note:As of March 15, 1996 there are a few openings still available;
persons interested in attending should send their application as
soon as possible, but by April 15, 1996 at the latest.
The Geometry Center and its Facilities
Located on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis,
the Geometry Center's facilities and highly skilled staff create a
unique and exhilarating setting for using technology in mathematics
research, education, and communication.
The Geometry Center was established as a National Science Foundation
Science and Technology Center in 1991. The purpose of the Center is
to foster the development and use of mathematical visualization and
communication software, and it has been a leader in these areas since
its inception.
