News Readers

On some machines, with some news readers, you will have to specify the news server (usually called an nntp server). For the Geometry Center, this is news-server.geom.umn.edu.

trn -- trn is the standard unix news reader. Be prepared for a long wait the first time you start it. It is fairly self explanatory.
gnus -- gnus is the emacs news reader. It is documented in the info system from the command prompt or within emacs.
NewsGrazer -- NewsGrazer.app in /LocalApps is the NeXT news reader. It works well, and features a news browser which allows one to navigate the news group hierarchy graphically. This allows it to initialize much faster than its text based counterparts.
Netscape -- Netscape, the web browser, also gives one a nice web interface to Usenet newsgroups. One particularly nice feature is a hypertext summary of unread articles. Invoke it by selecting to "Go to newsgroups" option from the "Directories" menu.
