Communicating with Hypertext
World Wide Web Resources
Beginners should probably consult the pages on
browsing the web,
making web pages at the Center,
and
including math in web pages.
- Web Browsers -- The
Geometry Center maintains a variety of browsers including Netscape,
Xmosaic, HotJava, Omniweb (for NeXT), and Lynx (text only).
- Web Tools -- There
are a wide variety of tools and techniques for producing web documents
including mathematics and graphics.
- CGI scripts -- An
introduction to writing gateway scripts for web pages at the Geometry
Center.
- Interactive web
applications -- Using the W3 toolkit developed at the
Geometry Center, it is possible to create interactive web
applications.
Non-Web Hypertext Resources
- Showcase -- This is SGI's hypermedia
development environment. One can put text, images, 3D models, sound, and
animations together with links. A very slick system, but it only runs
on SGI machines. Consult InSight online documentation (from weyl)
and the showcase help menus.
- MedisView --
MedisView.app
is a NeXT
multimedia publication environment. The Online documentation is
sketchy, but there are references to articles documenting the system.
It looks quite powerful, but may require some programming to take full
advantage.
- Mathematica and Maple notebooks -- The
notebook front ends to Mathematica and Maple provide only
limited hypertext functionality. However, for certain kinds of
exposition, notebooks are the best option. Consult the documentation
in the Center library.
- Window Help files --Although the Center provides
limited support for Windows help file creation, the wide availability
of Windows computers makes this a hypertext resource which should not
be overlooked. There are many public domain help file editors.
