Activities at the Geometry Center

Carol was primarily involved with the education, communication, and outreach activities of the Geometry Center, including:

Course design, development, and instruction:
- for a national audience of professional mathematicians, such as the 1996 summer workshop on Communicating Mathematics with Hypertext, and
- for pre-service and in-service teachers, both locally and nationally, such as Technology in the Geometry Classroom.
Collaboration with educational research groups and publishers: on the developement of materials to accompany Center products, including the software KaleidoTile and Kali, and videos such as Shape of Space.
Intellectual property issues: both as others want to use materials that come from the Center, and as the Center wants to use materials that have been produced by others;
Outreach to the mathematics research community: design and production of printed brochures, web pages, and a booth at the 1996 Joint Mathematics Meetings.

Background

Carol is interested in the effects of various technologies on teaching and learning, particularly in the mathematical and computing sciences.

If machines can compute answers, what do students need to learn?

Her dissertation research involved looking at the effect of different programming environments on the learning of a given computer language. Much of her work since then has involved looking at the effect of different computing environments (e.g., computer assisted instruction, intelligent tutoring systems, various computer algebra systems and visualization tools) on students' learning of mathematics.
