Self-Linking for Curves in Three Space
Gauss was one of the first mathematicians to investigate the concept of
linking
of space curves. He defined a mapping from a pair of curves to the two-sphere, and defined the linking number to be the algebraic number of times the sphere was covered by the image of the mapping.
