TeX on NeXT Systems

To tex a document with a minimum of effort and bother, the NeXT TeX package is a good choice. The TeXview previewer is an intuitive and well thought out tool, and the NeXT point and click editor is simple and easy to use.

Start TeXview by clicking on the TeX icon in the dock at the right edge of the screen.
Start the Edit application by clicking on its icon in the dock (a pencil and document). Warning: make sure it is the Edit application, and not WriteNow which has a similar icon.
Use the "File" Menu to open your document. Edit your file if necessary (using the arrow keys, mouse, and "Edit" menu). Save your changes from the "File" menu.
At this point you have a choice:
- Open a terminal and issue the commands to tex your file. Or:
- Go to the "Document" menu in TeXview and open your file. TeXview will try to compile it with plain tex. If it is some other dialect of TeX, use the "Compile" menu to choose the right tex command. Warning: sometimes TeXview will get the filename wrong, and prompt you for the correct name.
Once your file has texed correctly, and you are satisfied with it as it appears in TeXview, use the "Print" menu to send it to a printer. Usually, the default printer is the one you want, but if you are unsure, consult the equipment map or the printing reference page.

TeX on Non-NeXT Systems

On the Sun and SGI systems, the procedure is much the same, except that previewing and printing require separate commands. The procedure runs as follows:

Edit your TeX source file using some editor
Open a terminal and issue the commands to tex your file.
To preview your .dvi file, use the command xdvi filename.
To print a TeX file without included figures, use the command lpr -d filename.
To print a file with included figures:
- Create a combined PostScript file with the command dvips filename. The output file will be named filename.ps. If you type dvips without a filename, it will display a useful list of options. For example,
  dvips -p 6 -l 10 paper
  will create a PosctScript file containing pages 6 - 10 of paper.dvi.
- Now print the resulting PostScript file with the command lpr filename.ps
